Honesdale Awarded Grant for Dog Park, Trail at Apple Grove

January 24, 2023 – Honesdale Borough has been awarded $114,000 in grant funding from the Department of Conservation and Natural Resources (DCNR) to construct a dog park at Apple Grove along Fair Avenue (State Route 191) adjacent to the Honesdale Area Pool.

The Honesdale Borough Parks & Recreation Committee sought the grant funding with council’s approval in 2022. The application included design work completed by Woodland Design Associates, Honesdale, and was submitted by a contracted borough consultant Hailstone Economic, Scranton. DCNR announced the grant awards earlier this month. The DCNR Community Conservation Partnerships Program through which this grant was funded is comprised of a variety of state and federal funding sources.

Work will include construction of the dog park which includes fencing, gates, ADA parking access, landscaping, and a trail system connecting the pool parking lot with the dog park as well as signage and other site improvements. Members of the community provided signed petitions at the beginning of 2022 indicating their desire for a dog park in Honesdale Borough.

“We already know Honesdale has some amazing parks including Central Park and Gibbons Memorial Park which features Irving Cliff,” said Parks & Recreation Committee Chairperson James Jennings. “Now, our pool complex at Veterans Park and Apple Grove will get a kickstart on providing a new experience for our residents, visitors and our four-legged friends. We are extremely grateful for this opportunity and express our thanks to the borough’s partners and DCNR for recognizing the potential for our shared public spaces like Apple Grove.”

Construction is expected to begin sometime in 2023 with completion no later than 2024. Follow Honesdale Parks & Rec on social media this website to stay up to date on the project.
